Who knew that designing an album cover could be so much more than packaging design? Watch episode 130 here.
As a lifelong Metallica fan this interview was almost as good as sitting with the original band, as a packaging designer it was a masterclass on vision.
In this exclusive interview, Jamie McCathie, one of the brilliant minds behind the album's striking visuals, takes us on a journey through his creative process. From his early days in London to his work on some of the world's most renowned brands, Jamie’s vision persists.
So we had this dieline up on a screen with the shot as you go position pieces, and we're moving items around. So we already know that basically our canvas is this (album cover). That's our canvas. So this is the dieline we've got up is we're with the photographer and the retoucher, and we're moving things, and we're shifting things, and then we capture that one shot.
As he explains in the video, "Metallica 72 Seasons" is an exploration of the first 18 years of life and how they shape us as individuals. Jamie shares working with Bruce Duckworth and their approach to visually representing the album's themes, from the use of dark and light imagery to the incorporation of bright yellow as hope or warning signs.
And that's not all; we also get an insider's look at the behind-the-scenes workings of the project, with Jamie sharing some hilarious anecdotes about working with Metallica, including a phone call with Lars Ulrich and Bruce Duckworth.
